About

In September of 1949, the founders of the American Business Women's Association (ABWA) met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to transpose their dream for working women into a plan. They then transformed that plan into action. This was during a time when it was considered socially unacceptable for women to pursue careers outside of the home, let alone join a professional association, despite the fact that women had been encouraged to work during the height of WWII.

Mr. Bufton, one of the founders of ABWA, said that “In many ways, the first generation of ABWA members were the breaking tradition…Without even knowing it, I guess they were paving the way for today’s women.” The societal norms surrounding women and their roles in the workplace have certainly evolved since 1949, but there is still so much work to be done. When it comes to women supporting women, ABWA has been at the forefront of that effort.

The Lubbock Area Lights League of the ABWA was founded in the 1980s. Today, the Lubbock Area Lights League consists of over 40 members, and is proud to have partnered with several local non-profits for community projects. It provides professional development funds for multiple women per year, gifts scholarships through South Plains College, maintains an endowment at Texas Tech University, and provides annual Camperships to girls through Camp Mary White.

Many of the the members of the Lubbock Area Lights League are professionals in male-dominated fields and consultants or business owners who are often alone in their day-to-day operations. The fellowship provided at monthly chapter meetings and special events provides opportunities for the membership to provide support to one another, network, and enjoy each others company.

Chapter meetings occur on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6PM (CT) at the Lubbock Women's Club on Broadway, unless noted otherwise in the calendar. Reservations and a meal ticket are required for admission, which can be purchased through this site. Guests are always welcome! If you would like to learn more before attending a meeting, please contact us and one of our board members will reach out to you.
